Font - Posted by u/Frewdelgrums 2 hours ago Company laid me off, loses entire project I worked on I'm a software developer, recently laid off. The company was too cheap to pay for GitHub Enterprise, so we had to use our personal accounts and enable 2-factor authentication to access their GitHub organization. Then I fork all my repositories

Font - and submit pull requests like normal. (side note, I always had to bug people to review my code and approve it, otherwise it would sit in a pull request for weeks). I had been working on a new internal tool for over a month, it was a work-in-progress but I gave multiple demos showing new features and people were generally excited to start using the new tool.

Font - I was 95% done, it was ready for user testing, so I submit my pull request...and get laid off the next day. I spent the rest of the day angrily packing up, and was told all my work accounts would be deactivated the next day so I had to wrap everything up. So...I deleted my branch, deleted my fork, deleted all record of the tool. This is partially malicious compliance because we have to delete forks of work-related repositories for sEcUrItY rEaSoNs, otherwise they will auto-delete them.

Font - The next week, a former coworker (and friend) contacts me saying my pull request broke because the branch was deleted. The entire tool is gone, and now multiple heads of departments are angry that they can't use the tool that I demoed for them a week ago. oopsie

Font - Edit: extra funny note, per some rule they gave me 30 days notice and I'm still technically employed and getting paid. But for some dumb reason (likely sEcUrItY) they deactivated all my accounts after 24 hours. So they could have prevented this if they didn't go scorched earth. I've already had interviews with a competitor and they seem like they really want to hire me.

Font - I can neither confirm nor deny that I downloaded the code before deleting the fork. I may or may not release it as an open source project. I may or may not be looking into a license type that is free for personal use but costs money for corporations. Jeez...I probably won't because I don't care enough about it. The satisfaction of them losing the tool because I followed their instructions is enough for me.

Reply Share 1.1k Frewdelgrums OP. 2 hr. ago I don't want to be kind. lol I hated that company (most of the non-management people were fine though), but it was a paycheck so I stayed. Reply Share 426

Font - Herobrine__Player 2 hr. ago How did they not have the brains to have you finish it and give them the tool before firing you, idiots. 91 Reply Share phillypharm 2 hr. ago Having worked on some software devs, higher ups often think demos are finished products or someone junior could finish it up. Prob another reason they let OP go so quickly. 65 Reply Share

Font - Quick-Possession-245 2 hr. ago what on earth did they expect? well done. 60 Reply Share Frewdelgrums OP 2 hr. ago To be fair, all the people I worked with and the people I demoed to had no say in the decision. So I feel slightly bad for them, but them being angry about not having the tool that was promised makes management look even worse. So I'm all for it. 57 Reply Share

Font - carl63 99 2 hr. ago Almost the exact same thing happened to me. Let me go then asked for documents I had built a week later. Almost a year later, former manager emails me asking for my computer (which they disabled just a few hours after letting me go, so it was a brick). I sent the email from my personal email from HR that they received it, telling him that it was really a "you" problem. Good for you for doing what you did! 28 Reply Share

Font - butterfly-garden - 2 hr. ago They got royally forked. 35 Reply Share Frewdelgrums OP · 2 hr. ago 24 ●●● The funny thing is most other devs just create branches of the main repository, I was the only one that forked them (I have my reasons). So if it were anyone else, they would still have the code. Reply Share

Font - Dropthetenors 37 min. ago Good on you! Just hope you don't get in legal trouble. I know many places state they own anything you create while at their comp. Also destroying all progress could easily be seen as retaliation. You back up there is they told you to do it so best of luck! 4 Reply Share
